SECP official swept away by torrent

By Mohammad Asghar

RAWALPINDI, July 18: A senior government official was swept away by floodwater in Korang Nullah on Thursday night, police said.

Rashid Malik, a commissioner at the Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), was crossing a shallow portion of the brook when his car (GH-114) was hit by a strong current.

A senior police official said the commissioner’s vehicle was later pulled out of the water but the SECP official was missing. “Obviously, he tried to come out but could not and was swept away,” he said.

Quoting eye-witnesses, the police official said Rashid Malik was screaming for help but nobody tried to rescue him as the water level was high.

After about 12 hours, a team of divers from the navy reached the scene and tried to trace the missing man but they failed to do so.
