As the clocks struck midnight on Dec 31, the sky lit up with sparkling firecrackers and the air was filled with exchanges of greetings. The festivities signalled the end of one and the beginning of another year. The night is usually spent in celebrations by merrymakers — people of various age groups and backgrounds herald the New Year in their chosen ways.
The beginning of a new year is also a time to look back and take stock of your actions and achievements as well as shortcomings in the year gone by, to accept your failure with an open mind and learn from it. If you failed to achieve certain targets that you had set yourself last year it does not mean that you are not capable of achieving them ever. The age-old adage “If at first you don’t succeed, try again,” should give us all the courage to keep trying rather than lose hope and sit back disheartened.
You all must have heard the story of Tamerlane and the Ant. The story not only teaches us the lesson to keep on trying, it also tells us that no matter how great we are even a small insignificant being can teach us something. We should not hesitate in drawing lessons from those around us. In fact, those who begin to think that they know everything and need not be told anything are always at a loss. It is said that if you stop learning you stop progressing.
Though by this time most of you must have made your New Year’s resolutions, I would suggest that you add one more to your list — you would not hesitate in seeking knowledge and learning new things. And by this I do not mean bookish knowledge of what’s in your course books but also your surroundings and the world at large.
And while you are at it, pledge to share your knowledge.
